Sonny Eliot was born and educated in Detroit, Michigan. After high school he received Bachelor's and Master's of Arts degrees from Wayne State University. He enlisted in the Air Corp the day after the Pearl Harbor attack. He wanted to be a fighter pilot but because of the shortage of bomber pilots he was trained as a bomber pilot. After being trained as a pilot he was assigned to a B-24 bomber and sent to England.

Sonny was eventually shot down. He spent 18 months as a POW in Germany. While in captivity, he lifted the morale of the other prisoners by staging original skits and revues.

Sonny returned to civilian life after the war and resumed his career in broadcasting where he won numerous awards. He and his wife reside in Farmington Hills, Michigan.
